MIDI Controller

Date

September 2024

Project type

Electronics

In need of a last-minute birthday gift for someone important in my life who is a Music Director and Composer, I built a small Arduino-controlled MIDI controller that connects via micro usb to Ableton Live and MainStage. The MIDI controller features four knobs, four momentary push buttons, and four sliders that are all individually mappable in most standard DAWs. An important consideration in this project was small size due to the cramped nature of an MD's keyboard during a show, needing to balance lots of equipment in a small space. Another consideration was ease of use; this MIDI controller plugs into a laptop and connects to software exactly the same as an off-the-shelf MIDI controller. A final consideration was personalization -- purple is the favorite color of the recipient.
